Leander Weatherford doesn’t want a mage, but he needs one. Enchanted mechanical animals are all the rage among the upper classes, and selling them will save his struggling family business. Enter Jak, whose enchanting ability is second only to his talent for flirting. It’s dangerous to keep such a tempting man close, but Leander can’t resist—in more ways than one. Jak needs money to continue his aimless life of running. A partnership with Leander provides both income and a lovely diversion. Their masterful creations catch the attention of an eccentric baroness who offers them an enormous sum for an ambitious project—a full-scale mechanical dragon. Swept into a life rubbing elbows with nobility, Leander is pleased but overwhelmed. Spending both workdays and evenings with Jak, he finds himself drawing closer to the charming mage. But Jak is hiding a dangerous secret, and the truth could tear them apart.

"This book has all the sophistication of a very bad Disney script, circa The Little Dumpling Gang, albeit with an X-rating. It is ad hoc, thrown together without any sense of underlying logical, cultural, or emotional consistency. There's a pervasive middle school quality throughout, complete with stilted dialoque, characters whose emotional range is about that of video game cartoons, and even the explicit sex scenes are written through hamfisted cliches. To get through the book, I had to skim sections because the writing is appalling - perhaps not the worst, but this book would need a step ladder to stand next to a Penny Dreadful. The author clearly wants to write, and maybe he has ideas worth writing about; but I urge him to dig deeper and let your characters grow beyond being a collection of soundbites and attitudes from childhood TV shows."

- This book has all the sophistication of a very bad Disney script, circa The Little Dumpling Gang, albeit with an X-rating. - I can’t get over how this book was everything I was looking for but didn’t realize. You have a shy tinkerer that builds clockwork masterpieces but doesn’t realize their or his own worth. You have the exotic foreigner that’s on the run from his past but can’t help falling for someone that gives his heart as readily as his blushes. You have a badass self-made female character who only really wants one thing, which of course, is a pet dragon. I loved the blend of light hearted romance with fantasy.
The story isn’t just fluff though. The depth is what made me love this story so much. Leander deals with a wariness of mages after his mother died fighting them in the war(I appreciated the equality). But her death shades Leander’s interactions with Jak. This only makes Jak try harder to win him over. Jak has a devil may care attitude but he gradually falls for Leander’s innocence. I also really liked Jak’s backstory and thought it was really interesting. For all his bluster, he really does have a big heart and strong morals.
I’m really looking forward to the overarching storyline continuing because this is just the beginning of the series. I assume the rest of the series will be similarly filled with thrilling mage battles, overthrowing cultural norms as well as all the steam punk you could ever want. This is a must read for fans of The Whyborne and Griffin series because the tone is very similar. - I can't wait for the next chapter in this book!
Leander is so awkward and adorkable, I love how Jak falls for him.
THe worldbuilding unfolds, both thru the eyes of Jak, who is an outsider and figuring it out - its pretty confusing! and from Leander and how he reacts to 'well, this is how it is!'
I enjoyed reveal and exposure and discussion around their relationship, consensual sex, consensual rough sex, monogamy, as well as the introduction that Jak is bisexual, and hasn't always been monogamous, without getting into slut shaming him. I'm also pleased with the fact that despite not having relationship practice, Leander manages pretty well to state his boundaries once he realizes he CAN.
Their relationship still has missteps, and hurts and bumps, and its good. The book ends on a HFN, but still, can't wait for the next one!
I adored Leander's interactions and affection for his family, and how they were a tight knit part of the story as well.
The magic, steampunk, clockwork are all important - the spirts themselves binding to a clockwork is actually sweet, and there are aspects of Jak defending the gender neutrality of his clockwork cat, or insisting that Leander attend events because they are partners, that is adorable. - This is one of those novels that the cover and description don’t really do it justice. Leander’s family is very integrated into the plot of the novel, and Jak is both charming to them, and charmed by them. He’s a man without a country, and Leander’s close-knit group is all too easy to fall into, even though Jak knows that to save his own life--he will eventually have to leave them all behind. Their courtship is a sweet thing, with Leander having been much less experienced with relationships, and more concerned with how the influence of new acquaintances and class status will benefit his family. This continues throughout the novel, but Jak is melded into the process, and they are a well-matched pair in terms of needs and goals.
There are at least two instances where it would have been simple to go with common tropes and plot devices in order to make this novel progress to the next stage, but Harnois chose to go other routes, all to the better. One possible villain ends up being a trust ally instead, and Jak doesn’t suddenly become a different person, just because he has allowed himself to be taken to bed by Jak.
While this is a somewhat steampunk novel, the clockwork lifestyle doesn’t dominate the story line, to the exclusion of everything else. The creature that Leander and Jack first collaborate on becomes a member of the family, not just something to be made and sold. As well, the magic angle is laced in nicely, with only one incident where it becomes a central focus, but it does so in a way that is organic and fun.
This the first novel in a series, and I would have liked to see a bit more world-building in terms of the past that both Leander and Jak have had encroach on their lives before meeting one another, but I hope that is integrated in further, in the next novel.
