'The English Poetic Mind' (1932) is Williams' discussion of the source of the poetic impulse, creativity and drive behind three prominent English poets Shakespeare, Milton and Wordsworth. The text is reflective of Williams' imaginative and critical approach to literature and his appreciation of poetry and verse. Charles Williams (1886-1945) was a British theologian, playwright, novelist and poet. As a member of the 'Inklings' literary group at Oxford, his work supported a strong sense of narrative. For Williams, spiritual exchanges were an undercurrent to life, and his Christian fantasy writing, such as 'Descent into Hell' (1937), earned him many followers. This classic work is now being republished in a new modern edition with a specially commissioned introductory biography.

The English Poetic Mind Charles Williams 9781528708616 Books Reviews
- This is, possibly, the greatest book on textual criticism I've ever read. Williams charts the growth of that peculiar species, the English poetic mind, with wit and intelligence. The chapter on Shakespeare alone would be worth the price of the book; but Williams talks also of Wordsworth and Milton, as well as many of the 'lesser' lights of English poetry. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
You may ask why I would rave so much about this book.
Imagine a cynical, hard-bitten American, possessor of a somewhat dubious amount of education รข€“ and none of it concerning Shakespeare, or poetry.
Now imagine that person crying at the end of the chapter on the Bard.
Now do you understand? - A necessary book to anyone who is interested in the subject matter. The chapter on Shakespeare, in particular, is a revelation. A great book on English poetry by a great English poet.
